Now This Is All I Need - A Second Life!

It has been oh-so-long since publishing in Cobwebs Of The Mind. But like a wayward child it is gone and not forgotten.

I have much news to report from the writing world, and over the next couple of weeks some of the dedicated may learn about some really new and exciting markets opening up with serious people.

But first where was I? Oh my oh my. Writing, creating FaceBook Applications and more recently exploring the world of Second Life. Now for those of you who have no clue what Second Life is, and I am sure there are many, you should take a peek at the web-site Second Life.

Second Life is a graphic environmentally rich world, though not a social network like Facebook, put contains much power and some incredible things. For the techie in me it was hard to resist. So finally after being cajoled by a friend to finally in their words "would you at least try it!", I took the plunge into an avatar based system which certainly is at the cutting edge of 3D graphics on a computer screen.

Second Life can be anything you wish it to be. After all that is the purpose of a rich, animated (and I do mean animations!), graphic, colorful environment. It has gadzillions of SIMS (Simulated Worlds), it is based on real estate and you can shop, and buy and meet people and....and...and...

In other words, Second Life, in many ways mimics our real lives. It is fun and to the techie sometimes awesome.

But wait this is Cobwebs Of The Mind! Hits head! Smacks self. This is not a blog about graphics and technology. But as usual my dear readers, there is method to my total and complete madness (shush up those comments from the peanut gallery).

Second Life is replete with writers and authors. Lest you think we are only talking about the wannabes, forget it. Koontz made an appearance in Second Life. You can watch a Shakespere play in SL with voice. You can meet published and famous authors all the time in Second Life.

There are also various SIMS dedicated to writers, which I gravitated to. These SIMS have an ever growing amount of events for writers. Poetry, Novels and Short Stories are all represented. Readings, courses, workshops...it is really a growing and very interesting place for a writer to learn and to be.

Of course, as all over, the scammers are there as well, trying to take advantage of naïve writers. But we know this to be an evil we live with, and thus it should come as no surprise to any of us that some have invaded Second Life.

Well where are we going with all this? After meeting up with some published authors from all over the world, (and we will be doing some interviews with some of them, as their books are about to come out), it was fun to become an active part of the community. I teach three different workshops in Second Life, all well attended all fun, all with great people.

There are also some fairly interesting literary mags. available in Second Life. It of course is an extension of Internet/Ebook Publishing, though not in the same way. Protection in this closed environment is fairly good. And we will be doing an interview with an editor or two of these magazines to give you an idea of what they are looking for and how to submit.

They don't pay yet, this is a very expermental avenue, but a growing one, and most of the magazines have huge readerships, plus all have plans to move into the normative print medium. This is not something any writer looking for other avenues of publishing should ignore.

So, along with the normative posts we will be doing some on Second Life. Beware though, I have some really funny stories to tell.

By the way if you are already a Second Life member, come on over and visit me at Written Word in the SIM called Cookie. My Second Life identity is "Kitviel Silberberg" (shhhhh...don't tell anyone) and I am giving workshops on Blogging, Short Story Writing, and Ebook and Publishing Rights.

You will find the free Downloads of PDF summaries of all the Workshops by clicking here.

And if you are not then take a look at Second Life. Just don't get addicted!

Oh! Lookit! Lookit! Lookit! Yay! A New Blog!

When I started blogging seriously at Cobwebs Of The Mind, I was intent on just combining some posts on technology and writing. Technology because I served as Chief Technological Officer (CTO) for many years in some very successful companies. Writing because that is what I live, eat and breathe.

However, Cobwebs Of The Mind became much more popular in the writing arena than I had dreamed, and posts that I wanted to make in the technology arena were being constantly put on the "back burner". As Cobwebs Of The Mind began to become ever more popular, I also began two other blogs not connected directly with it.

Help! I Have A Fire In My Kitchen began on a blog because of a WIP of mine that became sort of a lost orphan. It is all about single parenting and learning how to cook. Readers are encouraged and welcome to submit recipes and humorous stories about their adventures in the kitchen. If you are interested is that sort of Blog, and I promise you it is funny and serious at the same time, take a look at Help! I Have A Fire In My Kitchen. If you want to submit your material there gravitate over to this post: Want To Submit a Humorous Story or Recipe?

Help! I Have A Fire In My Kitchen is slowly becoming fairly popular but still not to the extent of Cobwebs Of The Mind or the next blog I started, The View From Jerusalem.

Okay. Two blogs for one normal, sane individual ought to be enough, right? Well fortunately or unfortunately I am not what one call "normative" or "sane" (yes, I full admit it!) I guess one could say that The View From Jerusalem began because I truly felt their was a need for it. It is impossible at times to combat the utter junk and idiocy that makes its way out on to the Internet about Israel, and as many others out there, I too, had something to say about the Middle East and all that is going on here. I truly never expected especially in the case of the The View From Jerusalem that it would pick up in popularity as swiftly as it has done. If you are interested in a different perspective and not only about politics on Israel and world Jewry, then come visit The View From Jerusalem.

Ahh...but in all this the technology got left behind. I was spending time answering emails from friends who needed a favor or some information on how to do this and that. These are my "Technologically Challenged" friends and even some of the most elementary aspects of Blogging are way beyond them.

And so T3 - Teddy's Techie Tips has been born. Technology For The Technologically Challenged" is what the essence of the blog is. It will hopefully answer questions and facts about elementary and not so elementary questions in terms of blogging, tools, web design, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and various and sundry subjects.

Blogging has gone from a pastime to serious business. Hopefully T3 - Teddy's Techie Tips will show you how to, if you wish to, to keep your Blog as well, in the limelight among those who wish to read it. There are no magic answers here by the way. Some work, most of it just clicking away, and you will need a modicum of intelligence! But I will always attempt to simplify in the best way possible.

So if you are interested, mosey over to T3 - Teddy's Techie Tips and enjoy it. It is truly going to be a place in which Technology For The Technologically Challenged will be spread out as easily as possible for you.

Quick Update To the Beta Blogger-Search Problem

Give credit where credit is due.

The guys at Google Blogger and Search and the volunteers have finally isolated the problem

Cause they were really great so far I am posting the answer they gave so far:
Hi guys,

I'm back with an update. We've identified the bug that's causing certain blogs to not be indexed automatically by Blog Search. The problem seems to be caused by unusual characters in your blog (how unusual, huh?).

For example, for you twg, you have the following in your blog: "One author's musings about the world of writing, publishing, agents, books, & musing about the great what-if's of life, love, relationships, work, and the pursuit of happiness -what else is there?" The ampersand (&) here causes the problem because an ampersand has a special meaning in XML and HTML. In your case, Muser, you have Asian characters in your blog. chuckhov, you'll probably find something similar.

I apologize for this bug, and we're currently working on a fix that we hope to have out very soon - we're squashing the bug! I'll let you know when we have more updates for you, but I wanted to keep you in the loop of what's going on. Also, in the meantime, you can manually enter your blog URL into the Blog Search index by visiting the following site:

http://blogsearch.google.com/ping

Thanks for your understanding,
Jordan
I will keep everyone informed as time goes on if this is fixed or not.
In the meantime if you want to stay informed here is the thread link again:

Beta Blogger & Google - Problems with Blogger Indexing

In a post a few days ago I posted about what I thought to be a unique problem to my blog. The original post Google Beta Blogger - Hey Guys Can You Hear Me? explained that simply put, it did not seem that Google's own Blogger Search Engine (not the main Google engine) was indexing Cobwebs Of The Mind since I moved to Beta Blogger.

After waiting, I posted a note up at Google Blogger Help Group explaining the problem in detail. The thread that began, Beta Blogger & Google Search, has uncovered quite a few people complaining about the same problems. It also enlisted volunteers who cover the Group to try and get Google's Blogger team to deal with the bug.

For what it is worth here are the problems for you Beta Bloggers.

  1. Google's own Blog Search engine does not seem to be indexing any posts placed in a Beta Blog. It catches the site name etc.
  2. I do not know yet if this is only for Blogs moved from Blogger to Beta Blogger or for all blogs new and old, that are placed in the Beta Blogger.
  3. Backlinks - links you put in your post to other posts from other blogs or in your own blog - are totally dependant upon Google Blog Search and its indexing. Thus those links will not show up in the Blog Post that you linked to, either on your site or in another Blog.
  4. Simply put there seems to be a huge bug with blogger indexing and beta blogger in Google's search engine for Blogs.
  5. Google's main Search engine DOES pick up the blog and posts, though at a much longer delay rate. In either case it does not help with backlinks.
  6. As of this post no solution seems to have been found nor has there been any offering on the Google Group site as to where the problem may lie.
  7. It is clear that Beta Blogger and Blog Search are not seeing eye-to-eye as it were. If you are having problems with this as well, leave a comment here please with your blog address and take a look at the Beta Blogger & Google Search thread.
I will try and keep all informed if any normative solution is reached and when it will be reached. Until that time, if you are using Beta Blogger do not expect Blogger Search Engine to turn up your posts at all.

Google Beta Blogger - Hey Guys Can You Hear Me?

This will probably be an exercise in futility cause the whole problem lies in that since Nov. 5th when i moved to Beta Blogger for some crazy reason Google stopped indexing my blog.

On Sunday, Nov. 5th I moved over to Beta Blogger, when I saw that that the first official version was released. I was scared to do it cause experience has told me that moves to new versions of software are not usually as painless as they are promised to be. The move to Beta Blogger was painless. I was really happy. I was sick of power outages, the posting wheel, the slowness and the need to mess with the Template every single time I wanted to change something.

Google gets 5 stars for its new user-friendly Widget Template outline. Of course things are missing, but overall it was painless and I loved the results. The ease of changing templates was really incredible and coloring them as well.

So now what the hell am I complaining about?

Well I went back to blogging. And since I could no longer use Qumana (for some reason they have not gotten their act together with integration into Beta Blogger) I just gravitated with some fear to Google's own editor. Worked great. Had Labels (categories) and all I wanted.

So far so good.

So I post on Nov. 3rd. And I am used to a fairly low overhead for Google to pick up my backlinks. They usually pick them up immediately. This time even after 24 hours they did not pick them up. They still have not and it is Nov. 8th.

Okay I figure this is MY problem. So I begin checking the Google Search Blogger engine to see if it picked up posts from the Blog on or after my move. NOPE! NADA! NOTHING!

In other words since I have moved from Blogger to Beta Blogger the Blog has not been indexed. I can find no hint of this problem anywhere on the net. No backlinks appear in blogs that were linked to my posts (and yes they have backlinks turned on and links from posts in other blogs made after my posts are appearing) - and NO indexing.

Google Can You Hear Me?

Did Beta Blogger dump me in virtual land with no way to be found anymore?

Did you guys leave me on my own in the sandbox?

Can someone hear me out there in Google Land?

Qumana - Hey What's Up With You Guys?

Technological Rant For The Week:

In most of my posts you will notice at the very bottom a Qumana tag which will lead you to the Qumana web site. Qumana is a pretty good free program which does its work by allowing one to create a post and then post it into Blogger or whatever host you are using.

So today I moved to Blogger Beta, and I did see before I moved that Qumana had a hack for using Blogger Beta. So I figured what the hell...it should work. Now Blogger Beta has been around for quite a while and there is no reason in the world why Qumana should not have this integrated into their product already. There is no reason why a user should have to spend more than a minute changing the settings and then seeing them work. But of course... it did not work. Of course, Qumana still is not integrated. So for the time being I say goodbye to Qumana. It is not worth my time to search every site on the net looking for the correct hack.

Qumana - GET IT RIGHT. and Get it right now. Dissing a good product is not my favorite cup of tea. But this is ridiculous. I cannot believe that a huge part of your installed base has not just thrown up their hands in trying to get Qumana to work with Blogger Beta.

Help! My Life Has Become Google-ized

Progress! You got to love it! For years Microsoft ran my life. Now it is Google.

So I wake up in the morning and go to the computer. First thing is first. I have to check a myriad of email accounts, the most important being my private one. I use Google's Gmail. Why? Cause I got sick and tired of Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Eudora and all the rest. Sure they allow me to do things I cannot do in Gmail. But Gmail has one hell of a spam filter, I can categorize my email, and I don't have to run here and there looking for it. Great search too. Hell Gmail is good what can I say? So Google #1 is Gmail.

So my days begin with Google. Then I open up Firefox (long ago I abandoned IE in the dirt). And even when I need to see a sight built only for IE I have an IE extension in Firefox that allows me to stay in Firefox and duplicates IE inside a Tab. Firefox is pretty much Google friendly and ready. So of the toolbars that sit on my Firefox of course there is the Google and Yahoo toolbar. However when I search I usually gravitate to Google immediately (except when searching for images as I have found Yahoo does a better job). So Google #2 is search.

Then I must check out my blog. Guess what? Like much of the universe I use Blogger. Google #3. Why Blogger? Why not Wordpress? Blogs are blogs. Hell why not? It integrates nicely, I got my little Blogger button in the toolbar, and despite its sometimes slowness, it works for me most of the time. To post into the Blog I either use Qumana. a free standalone program much recommended or Performancing which is a Firefox extension. Each has its own plusses and minuses but I am used to Qumana which integrates nicely with Google Blogging (but not yet with the Beta Blogger of Google).

Okay, my Google life should end there, right? HAH! Now I want to check my site stats. So I mosey on over to Google #4. Google Site Analytics. Great stuff and gives me a notion of just what the hell is going on in my Internet sites and blog. Who is visiting what. Where from, when and how long. Can't beat it.

Okay now I want to know if anyone clicked on my Google Adsense Adverts. So of course, Google Adsense Reports. Or maybe I want to change their look etc. Again Google #5 Google Adsense.

And then sometimes I want to Google to crawl my site. So that is of course Google # 6 - Google Sitemaps. Build a sitemap submit it to Google and Voila - Sitemap crawling. (If you have a web site and dont use sitemaps - mosey over to Google SiteMaps and figure it out. It is well worth your while.

Then if I want a little paltry map of some street - you guessed it Google #7 Google Maps.

I don't use it cause I am so disorganized but there is also Google Calendar.

Actually the only thing Yahoo really has over Google is Yahoo Groups. Yahoo really shines in that department and is far ahead of Google. The new Yahoo mail is cool and I do have an account there, but it is really covered head to toe with advertising - so much so it gets confusing. So I don't see any reason to gravitate my mail over to Yahoo.

But you know what the best part of all the above is - Google and Yahoo. It is all FOR FREE. Beat that!

But I need to write. So I use the Holy of Holies - Office with Word, Excel etc. So the other day I needed to collaborate with someone on a document. He writes me and says, use Google's Word Processor and spreadsheet on line. That way we can each put our changes in without email back and forth. And so...

More often than not, my browser will be open with at least 2-3 tabs devoted to some Google service. That is why I love Firefox. Not for the extensions or themes. But for the Tabbed Browsing. And guess what? It too is free and NOT part of the OS either!

I am at a point I never thought I would be. I almost feel sorry for poor Microsoft. My life once ruled by the Master of Software Licensing has now become Googleized. And wouldn't you know it - for FREE too.

Now that is progress for you!

Basics of Blogging Series: Part 23 - RSS - How To Get Your RSS Feed Up On The Web

In this article we will discover just how to get your RSS Feed up on the web, and what is possible and what is not with an RSS feed.

Remember: Most Blogging Software builds RSS straight in and there is absolutely nothing you need to do. This RSS part of the Blogging series is for you to get as sophisticated as you like with your own custom made RSS feed.

  1. Naming your RSS file - Your file name does not have to be rss.xml You are welcome to name it to whatever your little heart desires, though the .xml extension is kind of important for your editors to know just what file the software is dealing with.

  2. Now that you have the file - what do you do with it? Okay first thing is first. Take the file and place it in your Web directory where everyone can get to it. Lets say we named the file "ballchain.xml" and we move it (ftp) to our web directory under the address of www.janisjoplin.com/rss/ballchain.xml. Now we know and the rest of the world will know where that file is. Don't put it in a secured or password directory UNLESS you are only granting secure, password access to it to specific people.

  3. Now before you do anything else, BEFORE you release this great RSS feed to the world you MUST make sure it is valid. Of course you have been careful. Of course you never make typos. Of course you got it down pat. Still go and VALIDATE. How do you do this? Well nothing can be simpler. There are many validating engines out there. One very good one, which will of course drive you crazy over every small mistake, but it is good is at: http://www.feedvalidator.org. When you have an error it will lead you to the pages that explain your error. You should get into the habit of validating your feed EVERY TIME you change the RSS file.

  4. Okay NOW we can finally go get our little orange "XML" or "RSS" button. That is easy. If you want to just go to a sight with the button already, and since it is public domain just copy the image with your browser. Move it over to your Web, and put in on your page where you will offer RSS to the world. Then add an HTML href command to the button, so that when a user drags it into their aggregator the correct file will be grabbed. The code will look something like this:

You also have the option of going to a site where you can create your own button. One such internet site is: http://www.lucazappa.com/brilliantMaker/buttonImage.php There you can make a standard size RSS button with your own logo on it.

  5. Now you have the file and logo and the hyperlink to your RSS feed on your main page. Now you have to go out and Submit your feed address to the RSS Feed Directories. There is also software that will do this for you as well. Instead of listing the many RSS feed directories here, just Google or Yahoo for "RSS Feed Directories" and submit your RSS URL to them. Remember the URL to your feed is NOT your home page. It is rather "www.janisjoplin.com/rss/ballchain.xml".

  6. Think you are done? Hah! Now you want the major search engines to know about your feed right?

  7. UPDATE Your Feed - Now you created your xml file, uploaded that and the image to the web, submitted your feed, gotten a whole host of RSS feed buttons, from Google, Yahoo, MSN and NewsGator. Now all you have to do is make sure that you update your content on a fairly continuing schedule and that your RSS feed is constantly available.

  8. Will you know how many people access your feed? This is a tricky and difficult question with no real solution as of yet. So the answer is no, you will not. Unless you are a real techie and want to spend time in mining your server logs or putting invisible images into your feed (like they do in email to see if it was opened and in RSS that is not foolproof) forget it. You can of course mine your server logs looking for hits on the ballchain.xml file but that is time consuming and an incredible amount of work. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT PUTTING Javascript IN THERE OR SOME OTHER SCRIPT SO A HIT COUNTER CAN COUNT IT. It will destroy the well formed XML and will not be aggregated or read as it will no longer be an RSS feed document.

  9. RSS IN your Web Site - If you go to some sites on the web, not only will they offer you their own orange button but you will see an RSS feed in fed into their web pages. And when you see that you say "Hey I want this in my web site too!" Well you can do that as well. But before I tell you where to go on the net to get it (its for free too) I want to explain two possibilities here. The reason why many sites (including my own) put an RSS feed on their web page, is because it creates and adds content to the web site. After all the whole issue of content is what makes places like www.ezinearticles.com rock! If you are interested in content ONLY for your viewers than you don't have to worry about the following. However, if you are interested in content for search engines as well be aware of the following two possibilities.

    • Many places will offer you a Javascript code to put in your web page. This is great, but be aware that search engines are "blind" to Javascript. What is placed within that code is simply not taken into account. Therefore, all the content being picked up by your link to the New York Times RSS Feed and put on your web site will not be indexed.

    • Some places offer you PHP code as well. This requires that your web server supports PHP, which if you are not a techie you will have to check. And then you will have to usually make sure that your page is named say home.PHP and not home.html After that you can insert the PHP code into your page (as short as the Javascript code). BUT the GREAT thing is that search engines DO SEE the content that is in that PHP code, and that content will be indexed along with your web site. And search engines LOVE CONTENT.

For either possibility you can check out one such place. http://www.rssfeedreader.com/ There are others and once again a search will reveal a world of possibilities. Rssfreereader.com does have some really good options though both for Javascript and for PHP.

  10. RSS Aggregator - There are zillions of those. If you use FireFox you can find some great RSS aggregators as Browser extensions. If you want a Desktop Aggregator just do a search for them. And then of course there are Windows aggregators that work within your browser (not as extensions). I don't feel right in suggesting one product over another, so I will not give a list here. They are readily available in any search on the web. Some are free, others you pay for. It is your decision.

  11. Well we have come to the end of our RSS Mania - Understanding RSS Series. Some things like CSS files and formatting your RSS for HTML are not in the purview of this series and are a lot more technical. However, I hoped you learned about RSS and why this mania is sweeping the web.

Basics of Blogging Series: Part 22 - RSS - A Full RSS Feed Template For Podcasting & VideoCasting

This is a "full level" RSS template. Here we add the enclosure command for PodCasting. My previous article had the basic bare-bones template and the full template with the CDATA construct. Now we will have a template for Podcasting or Videocasting.

You can easily copy and paste this into a template. If you are not a techie and dealing with XML for the first time, use a decent text only editor, unless you can use FrontPage or DreamWeaver or a dedicated XML editor. Be careful of any extra charcters that you may sneak in with your typing, and remember not to touch the opening or closing brackets. If you do not know what you are doing do NOT touch the first three lines. The line beginning with the "channel" element is where you should begin to substitute the information on your feed.

Below we have two items in this channel. You can of course add as many items as your heart desires. Just keep on adding the entire section of beginning and ending with

and filling in the information.

Just to remind you. The enclosure command consists of three parts:

  1. url - The URL of the actual enclosure.

  2. length - The size in bytes and not an estimate but a total exact size

  3. type - A standard MIME type, e.g. Audio, Video, Text etc. A list and explanation of standard MIME types can be found here - http://www.fileformat.info/info/mimetype/standard.htm

By the way. We are keeping RandyPandy's Perfumery, but since his wife Sandy loves Janis Joplin the enclosure command will contain Summertime from Janis. Hope you don't mind!

First a template with information and then a template without.
(The editing software forces an empty line between each command however in your Feed you should not have any empty lines. Just delete the lines with no information if you copy & paste)

First a template with information and then a template without.

Basics of Blogging Series: Part 21 - RSS - A Full RSS Template File to Create Your Very Own RSS Feed

This is a "medium level" RSS template. Here we add some more Channel information plus the CDATA command along with the rest of item commands. This template is without the "enclosure" command. My previous article had the basic bare-bones template and my next one will have a template you can use for Podcasting or Videocasting.

Below we have one full item and one bare bones item in this channel. You can of course add as many items as your heart desires. Just keep on adding the entire section of beginning and ending with

and filling in the information.

The editing software forces an empty line between each command however in your Feed you should not have any empty lines. Just delete the lines with no information if you copy & paste.

First a template with information and then a template without.

Basics of Blogging Series: Part 20 - RSS - A Basic Template File to Create Your Very Own RSS Feed

This is a bare-bones RSS template. Well it is a bit more than "bare-bones" however, it only contains the information at the minimum you should have in your RSS file. My next two articles will have the "medium level" and "full level" (good if you intend to Podcast).

The editing software forces an empty line between each command however in your Feed you should not have any empty lines. Just delete the lines with no information if you copy & paste.

First a template with information and then a template without.
