A Little Bit Of Nice Over @ Pub Rants

Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers Awarded To The Entire Blog Called:
Pub Rants
For Being A Useful Blog Full Of Information On How An Agent Thinks & Works For The Inquiring Author

Pub Rants where Literary Agent Kristin of the Nelson Literary Agency puts down her thoughts and musings, as the blog sub-title states: "A Very Nice Literary Agent Indulges In Polite Rants About Queries, Writers, And The Publishing Industry" lives up to her promise of being "very nice". Those of us used to Miss Snark and The Evil Editor (I still don't understand his blog) are presented with a different personality and way of looking at things.

Kristin's description of herself remains true throughout the blog.
A nice Midwesterner breaks free of her genteel upbringing and says what's on her mind--politely of course--some habits are really hard to break.
However, nice or not, do not confuse this with not getting a point across. Kristin does this in her own succinct manner. She does publicize her own success - that is a given - but she also in a down-to-earth manner constantly encourages writers.

For instance, in a Post entitled "The Dead Zone" she tells writers:
But here’s the reason why we don’t submit much after the first week in December. A lot of editors take extra holiday time around this time of year because publishing slows down. So a lot of key decision makers tend to leave the office early and if you have a project generating excitement… editors have to confer with those key people.

It’s just too frustrating so we wait until the calendar turns to the new year.
So now you know why your query letter or you manuscript is taking a bit more time, and you don't have to curse the agent in your lonely room for not dealing with your work!

But actually I found utterly fascinating the post "A Year in Statistics" in which she places her stats before us. You can learn a great deal from these stats: (I am just going to quote the ones I found fascinating).
20,800
(Estimated number of queries read and responded to in 2006)

54
(Number of full manuscripts requested and read)

8
(Number of new clients taken on this year)

21
(Number of books sold this year—not counting subsidiary rights stuff)
That query letter number is fascinating. 20,800! OMG! Poor Kristin. Her eye doctor must love her! OMG!

And out of all those queries 8 new clients were taken on after reading 54 full manuscripts. That is 54 full books!

But what it should tell us is that agents do deal with an incredible amount of queries. They do read them. There is no doubt that what you write must stand out from the crowd. (Which destroys my writing career because my query letters totally and completely suck big time!)

And through all this Kristin stays sane. Though her Ipod addiction - well I will not comment on it as one never knows if my query may one day end up on her desk!

Sometimes it is important to read Agents that do not have a "unique cynical tone". Sometimes it is important for us to read the real nuts and bolts stuff. So we get perspective.

Pub Rants gives us perspective. It is written by a nice person, a successful agent and full of interesting facts about being an agent and manuscripts. Agent Kristin at Pub Rants does all writers a great service in what she does and how she does it. Make this a daily or weekly stop on your Agent Blog reading. You will learn a great deal from it. A real big thumbs up for Pub Rants.

(Hey Kristin...do you take short story collections? All right all right...sheesh stop mumbling about crazy writers under your breath! - Hah. She still is nice!)

Possession, Obsession & Miss Snark

Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers Awarded To The Entire Blog Called:
Miss Snark
For The Obsession Of Helping Writers & For True Altruism

I always take a daily peek when I can at the blog of Miss Snark. Currently Miss Snark is running another round of her infamous Crapometer, or sometimes referred to as "crapfest". I read a bit, skim even more, and sit back in a bit of awe and yet really in doubt of this person's sanity. What possesses Miss Snark to do this? What inner motivation can such a person have?

Let us look at the facts. Miss Snark is anonymous. Personally I do not care who she is or who he is or who they are. Cause it makes no difference in the end. Wish away as much as you want to, it would be impossible to get someone named Miss Snark as your agent. Oh, you might, in your query letters, happen to query the "right" agent who just happens to be the Snark persona, but you would never know it.

So what does Miss Snark get out of this fest where she reads hooks, (over 500 of them!) from authors all around the globe, and comments on each and every one of them. Reading through her comments, if one is intelligent and aware, one can see and learn a great deal about how to write a query to an agent. So Miss Snark teaches us. I agree, she does it often in a cynical manner, often making us cringe, but in the end result it is purely altruistic. In the end result if you want to learn how to better your query - you will.

Oh, maybe you think what Miss Snark does is - she, he or they - get a great hook and then approach the author under the guise of the "real" person. I tend to doubt that very much. Cause if that happened more than just once it would be all over the internet with people comparing notes.

Hell, I wish Miss Snark would do that to me. I don't deny it. I wish she would peruse this blog, see my publishing credits, read some of them and then somehow an agent would ask me to see my work! And I also wish I could win the lottery too! But then again I didn't send anything into the Crapometer.

So what is this possession and obsession of Miss Snark? She is loved and hated. She is vilified and praised. She is nice and she can be oh-so-nasty when someone hits her funny bone. What is up with her, him, they?

My conclusion - MHO - Miss Snark is simply out there because when all is said and done, she truly believes in good writing. Maybe she has been there and done it as an author. Maybe she has too been burned. Maybe she got sick of the BS. Maybe she is not really a literary agent but someone who knows a great deal about publishing. All are possible.

I am suspicious of altruistic people - until they prove themselves. Simply because life has taught me that most people want something in return. I don't see that happening with the Snark persona. There is nothing we can give her in return except to succeed with "fine writing".

I finally realized, when all is said and done, besides her contributions to hundreds of authors struggling to find the right words, Miss Snark's real contribution, to my mind, is her devotion, determination, obsession and being possessed by the desire to help others.

In my mind that in and of itself makes Miss Snark deserving of a great big virtual hug. For doing this, for devoting time and effort, she has my full respect.

It would be good for all those who laugh and cry with her words to remember always that Miss Snark is obsessed.

May all of humankind be as obsessed with helping others in their own way half as much as Miss Snark. It would be a hell of a better world for all of us.

Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers - "A Gent's Outlook"

Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers Awarded To The Entire Blog Called:
for Worthless Posts & being the Mother Of All Wannabes

Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers @ Cobwebs Of The MindOur very first "Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers" is awarded to an agent's blog known as "A Gent's Outlook". I first came across this "gem" in a link supplied on Absolute Write. If this blog were only useless I would ignore it. There are many blogs out there in blogosphere land that were started by agents, editors and publishers that were never updated after the first month. Either the agent just did not have time or they realized it is not so simple to get people to read what you write! (Must be a humbling experience for an agent to realize that the "plebeians" just don't want to read their musings.)

However, "A Gent's Outlook" takes the term "useless" and goes one step or many a great deal more. So first let us look at the nature of this blog. Here we have yet another, self-pronounced Literary agent, who divulges his real or fictitious name as SammyK. And just to make sure that you have no doubt he calls himself or considers himself an agent, the URL he chose for his blog, is: agentsoutlook.blogspot.com. To make that even clearer this blog runs with the subtitle, "A Literary Agent Divulges the TRUTH about Publishing".

Now though we now know we are looking at the blog of an "agent" or at least that is what Sammy calls himself, upon further investigation we also discover that we truly know nothing about this person. "Ahh," you say to yourself, "Another Miss Snark. Another Rejecter. Another Evil Editor."

Yes another anonymous voice in the Internet Blog deluge of information to entertain the hapless writers out there. But this anonymous voice is particularly inane, insulting and puerile. What makes the whole thing truly laughable is after plowing through a couple of Sammy's posts is that you discover this Blog is being used by someone to abstract revenge on people who are just leagues ahead of him in knowledge, humor and understanding of the publishing field. It is simply a vituperative effort in ill-concealed jealousy and ranting.

Sammy's favorite words seem to be "wannabe" and the ole' F*** word. Now having grown up in Manhattan, my ears are not virgin, and I guess given a good reason I could curse with the best of them. But when the word appears in what you write more times than a New York taxi cab driver stuck in the middle of midtown traffic on a Friday afternoon would utter it - something is a bit off. Sammy likes the "F" word. He thinks it is cute and funny. Two posts even have it in their heading. (The stars are mine, Sammy spells it out for you). "He Who Laughs Last, Laughs at the Rest of You F****** Morons", and "Why You Should Never F*** on a Computer Desk".

But let us put down the pet peeves and themes of this "professional agent" in his blog. They are fairly simple.
  1. Miss Snark is a hateful fool and a wannabe
  2. Writers are all whiners and clueless and all wannabes
  3. Anyone taken by a scam deserves it
  4. Why doesn't anyone pay attention to Sammy
Sammy has a real "thing" for Miss Snark. If I were to put it in his terms, he has a "hard on" for her. It is not that he does not like some posts of Miss Snark or does not agree with her. It is that he simply "hates" her. (Which I admit is kind of funny from one anonymous Blog owner to another). Post after post he comes back to the same thing - his enemy Miss Snark.

Make no mistake. Miss Snark also curses. Sometimes a bit too much. Sometimes she is over the top in her cynical attitude. And sometimes Miss Snark is just wrong. But I have yet to see a concentrated and continuous attack on anything in Miss Snark besides scammers (whom Sammy seems to think are the just curse for wannabe writers.)

In the end there is a whole world of difference between the two. All it takes is just a cursory reading of the posts made in November to see this incredible jealousy rear its truly ugly head.

Now, if it was just an attack on Miss Snark in every post, I would say, "You know what. The guy may have a point here and there." But it is not just an attack on what she says. It is a combination of "why do people listen to Miss Snark and they don't listen to me?" routine.

Here is one fine example from an agent who we are supposed to learn things from:
"As I see it, people across Cyberville are finally cluing in to the fact that Snark is mouthpiecing the core values propagated by the watchpuppies and their related industry outsiders. Other publishing people, LIKE ME, couldn’t give a shit less what anybody thinks except talented writers and the publishers who seek to exploit them. I have seen lots of comments, finally, from editors and other agents who are basically saying that Snark is on a very wrong tangent. She always has been, but nobody important said anything because SNARK JUST DOESN”T MATTER. Except to the minions she has created through her Dr. Phil Does Publishing persona. When she dipped into an area she really doesn't know anything about, she fell flat on her pretty little snout."
And here is another one from another post entitled "If You Knew Judy Like I Knew Judy (or The Greatest Wannabe of All)":
"I know Snark’s fans are too wannabe to understand the profundity of this little scandal in the ranks up here where the air is rarified, but us REAL agents are giddy. Kind of like watching someone get caught with her underwear stuck in her pretty little crack."
Oh dear reader, it goes on and on endlessly. It is tiring; it is imbecilic; it is foolish; and it is damn stupid and not even funny. Sammy too, is an anonymous agent. But Sammy does not even pretend to give us "wannabes" any information. His whole being is concentrated on one thing. Snark is an idiot, almost all authors are wannabes, and Sammy is King.

Let us read this little gem from a post entitled "Answer: You are a wannabe and know nothing about the industry and you shouldn’t be in it".
"I am a publishing industry professional who has put a lot of time and effort into doing my job well enough that I can take pride in my work. And yet, as I look around the internet, I can’t help but wonder if I am completely crazy or what. Other so-called industry professionals are blogging their little hearts out, providing information to wannabes as if it is going to get them somewhere besides Looneyville. I just sit here and wonder if I am delusional. I look around. There’s the contract on my desk from a major, so that’s real. Or did I print it out on my computer? What are those scribbles on it—signatures? Am I hallucinating? Maybe. But the call I got from the Oscar-winning director’s assistant yesterday--that seemed so real! The option offer seemed a little too high--could I have been drunk? Maybe I’m in a coma somewhere and don’t know it. The things I read on the internet just don’t add up, so it must be me. Have I finally lost what little mind I had left before the wannabes started sucking on my brain?"
The problem lies in that we are just subjected to these dumb rants from someone who claims to be an agent and want to give us the "TRUTH" about publishing. Try as hard as I could, I could not find one, not one, piece of advice to help me further my writing on a sane basis. I found out how great Sammy is (whoever he is, and to be perfectly frank - I don't give a damn), I found out how well Sammy is versed in normative street language, I found out how much Sammy thinks of himself, I found out how all writers are wannabes and stupid, I found out how much Sammy hates Miss Snark. All this I learned. Nothing else. Nada. Zilch.

Which of course leaves us with the overwhelming question as to what purpose this series of inane posts can possibly lead to besides self-gratification of an incredibly over-inflated ego.

Though Sammy only posts intermittently, I have no clue why anyone with even some self-respect left would frequent this blog. It is just full of hatred, idiotic statements, rants and certainly a somewhat deranged mind overcome by "Internet popularity jealousy". Waste your time doing something else, like playing Monopoly. You will learn a great deal more and not come away questioning the overall sanity of this child. In the end, Sammy simply needs a good spanking and some time-out time in his bedroom. Being stuck alone with his lovely personality is the ultimate revenge for Sammy.

Sammy's blog persona is just a bitter, mean person ravaged by jealousy and pettiness. It seems this "Gent" is suffering from a real acute case of "page-rank envy". Some people raise their page rank in normative ways. Others try to be funny by poking fun of people, hoping that this kind of humor will garner a following. One of the great lessons in life is when you poke fun at others in a mean and bitter way you just end up making a fool of yourself.

The only thing I could hope for is a swift death for the blog, and Sammy relegated into the realm of mediocrity and wannabe-ville he so richly deserves.

For as Sammy proves over and over again, the only Wannabe in his blog - is Sammy himself.

Introducing The "Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers"

Super Teddy! As writers we often scour the Net for any piece of information that can help in our quest to get our books published. We have out our disposal quite a few web sites and blogs that offer us information on what to do and how to do it. Some are good, some mediocre, some are really just plain stupid and bad.

I often scour these Blogs and Web Sites for information for Cobwebs Of The Mind as I am sure you know. And at times I get really fed up with some of those "professionals" who want to tell us they know it all and how to do it and what to do when they cannot even write a correct sentence. At other times you may find a gem here and there. I use all this information for Cobwebs Of The Mind and hopefully the many readers are learning day by day - with a bit of humor and intelligence.

And I know many writers scour these pages of wisdom and information as well. Over at Absolute Write some of the most popular threads are about Agent Blogs. There is even a thread called: List of Agent Blogs and another one called: A debate about agents.

Today, maybe because of my mood, maybe because I just had it up to the gills with some of the nastiness against writers I have read on a few Blogs or maybe just because..., I have come to the conclusion that it is time to take a bit of our "writers pride" back from the host of bashing blogs and editors.

Super Teddy! So I am introducing the "Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers" with it's very own mascot. What I will be doing is from time to time when I find a particularly good or smart or valuable piece of information; or a particularly stupid or loathsome or idiotic statement in an agent's or editor's blog or web site - I will post it here, in Cobwebs Of The Mind for the "Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers".

Oh yes, dear reader you read right. Don't gasp! Don't worry. Teddy is going to give back just what the writer's receive. If it is baseless idiotic comments on some Agent's or Editor's blog, then it is about time to return the favor is it not? Of course your comments will be welcome. And if you have any suggestions of specific Blogs, Web Sites or Posts that should be discussed, let me know in a comment or send me an email. You can stay anonymous if you like. But Teddy is not ashamed nor will I hide.

It is time for the writers to fight back!!!

P.S. Stay tuned and tell all your friends. Because I already have the First Award in the
"Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers" all lined up!
