The World Of Electronic Publishing

Many authors and would-be writers essentially shy away from submitting to electronic ezines and publishing venues. They want to write, get an agent and fly off into the wild blue yonder of fame, fortune and wonderful things. This is a given, and none of us can claim exclusion from this dream.

The number of online magazines has skyrocketed in the last fifteen years, from 25 in 1992 to over 4000 by 1999 (according to The Book of Zines). Today, with e-zines appearing and vanishing like fireworks (or pop-caps) the number has become too large and too fluid to accurately measure. Those of us who do use the short story as a means of writing, even though we are involved in writing the next Pulitzer Prize winning novel, face even a worse problem. The number of magazines publishing in print media short stories, has severely dwindled over the past 30 years and thus there is just that much more competition to find a slot in one of these magazines. Of course it is true that every year people do break into this field, they do find their short story published, in the Atlantic Monthly, Paris Review and New Yorker - it is a long shot with the odds clearly not in favor of the "unknown" writer. (Some of this is covered in the post - The Short Story Market here at Cobwebs Of The Mind.)

Recently, I have recieved quite a few email letters pointing out various ezine publishers etc. Today in a perusal of the blog run by CyberCobre over at The Deepening, she put in a blog post simply directing readers to the on-line editorial at "Allegory"which has been publishing SF, Fantasy & Horror short stories for quite a few years now.

Under the title - "E-publishing: The Struggle Continues ..." the editor of Allegory displays some interesting figures. Now I am not a SF or Horror author, and the only Fantasy writing I do, is in regard to the "The Chronicles of the Children of Heaven" however, I find these figures illuminating.

He writes (bold is mine):
The number of online magazines has skyrocketed in the last fifteen years, from 25 in 1992 to over 4000 by 1999 (according to The Book of Zines). Today, with e-zines appearing and vanishing like fireworks (or pop-caps) the number has become too large and too fluid to accurately measure. Regarding book length work, more and more book publishers are appearing, many with unique (sometimes clever, often less so) approaches to the sticky questions of marketing and copyright protection.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that, if I am to be honest with you (and myself) electronic publishing simply isn't there, yet.
He follows this with the normative and quite common list of complaints against ezine publishing. I suggest you read the article if you are indeed considering to an ezine - electronic magazine venue.

All this is very true. Ezines are not there. "Yet" is an operative word which even on the "yet" the jury is out. People simply do not want to read off of screens. (Which by the way is the genius in Bellow's new endeavor where he takes digital media and puts it into print format. See: The New Pamphleteer).

Ezines have a long way to go and their hardest and most difficult battle will be with the "psychological" aspects of getting people like you and me to read on line.

So the question remains for short story writers. How do you get something out there and published under a legitimate credit? How do you begin the career in short story writing? How do you create any type of "buzz" around your writing and name? How do you deal with the need to be published and cannot get an agent to publish you?

The bad news is that, if I am to be honest with you (and myself) electronic publishing simply isn't there, yet. Ezines - and I admit it depends on which ezine - are becoming a legitimate way to go. They will not buy you the prestige of publishing in the New Yorker. Often, they are here today and gone tomorrow. Often they are run by people who cannot read let alone be editors. BUT, the right ezine, the right electronic magazine can buy you some "credits". It can buy you some "prestige". It can legitimately be used to give "credits" to a perspective agent. Miss Snark for instance has said over and over again, if she can Google your name and find you have been published in a legitimate source, even on-line, that is a "legitimate" credit.

I do not think ezines will buy you a career in publishing. They will not make you famous. 100 stories in the best of the best ezines are simply not equal to one story in The Paris Review. But they can give you a platform for starting off. They can give you a way to get your writing "out there". And as your popularity grows, and as Ezines become more and more entrenched and accepted, your work will be up there in the Internet, in the search engines, and on copyright as well.

Is this the magic carpet ride for authors? No way. No how. Is it something to use for your career - most definitely.

The good news today is that there is an unannounced movement going on among ezine owners, where they are attempting to create an organization, which will further legitimize ezine publishing.

If you are a short story writer, and you want to see your work published, and are not willing to hold out for the New Yorker, then perhaps the time has come to consider the good and established ezines out there. But do not think this is your magic ticket into the world of traditional publishing. It is a legitimate way to build credits. It is a viable way. And thus should not be discounted.

Looking Back...

Hey folks...I'm BACK!

(Hold off the applause.)

Sorry about the lapse in posting to Cobwebs Of The Mind this past week. I decided to take a break from posting in the blogs as I was getting severely pissed off with certain things I have been reading on the Internet and needed time to step away and think. Otherwise I possibly would have taken a bite out of someone's tushy - a big, nasty, rabid bite to boot.

I may still do it. But for the moment I have that simmering flame under control.

A couple of weeks ago in the Cobwebs Of The Mind Blog Review, I published the review - "Cobwebs Of The Mind Blog Review: Sharon Maas's "Down From the Garrett". Sharon then added in her Live-Journal, "Down From the Garrett" a few remarks about the review in her posts.

In this posting among other things Sharon wrote:
On Cobwebs Of The Mind, Teddy spends a lot of time musing over various aspects of the publishing industry. He comments on spam agents, cowboy publishers. He gives his view on the latest scandal to rock the industry and sheds his own special light on various issues. He's very opinionated - but his opinions are well thought out and full of a passion for finding the truth. He will never adopt a particular opinion just because it's the flavour of the day. There's integrity and strength in his words, whether he tells you what he thinks of the Anne Stuart Affair or weighs or in on the Sobol Award.

I often get the feeling that when teddy speaks, it really is The Last word on the subject.
I am opinionated, but I am certainly not the last word on any subject. But to be honest the one thing that I did decide when opening Cobwebs Of The Mind - was that above all costs, no matter what it meant in Internet popularity, was to keep my integrity. And thus the reason for this post. A bit of musing on the past and a bit of criticism and a bit of trying to understand it all.

This year I opened Cobwebs Of The Mind, starting off as an experiment in blogging. I had no clear plan where I was going to take it. Indeed, the thought process was, to just simply give another outlet for writing while I was planning, editing or otherwise working on WIP's in progress. Cobwebs Of The Mind kind of took on a life of its own. I went with the flow and tried during free time to give a serious study to the world of Internet writers, literary agents, editors and publishing.

It turned out to be a much more complicated study than at first envisioned. I did not expect the plethora of seriousness and absolute junk all mixed together. I also did not expect to find much that was worthwhile. In this, I fully and happily admit I was wrong.

What did surprise me, to be honest, are the people - writers, editors and agents - whom I have developed relationships with via email because of Cobwebs Of The Mind. I found this very loosely knit community of virtual voices at times articulate; at times compassionate; at times childish and vengeful; and at times incredibly giving. I have also discovered some of the "human" element behind the voices so respected on the Internet in regard to publishing and agents. That alone has made Cobwebs Of The Mind a worthy endeavor from my point of view.

My one big shock, and I am saddened by having to say this, came from "left field" as the saying goes. Whereas in the past I would always look at the writer's forum, Absolute Write, with a great deal of respect, that opinion has certainly changed. Absolute Write has changed. In my eyes, not for the better. Indeed many good people and writers have slowly faded from this writing forum due to a variety of reasons. It is sad. And while I would still recommend any writer who is starting off, to make a serious study of the Bewares & Background Checks board at Absolute Write, I would have to say that unless you are willing to put up with a handful of overbearing personalities, and a lot of just plain good ole' ego - be wary of the forum. It is no longer "monitored" - I would have to say the correct term here is - it is "policed" - and most certainly policed with great prejudice.

Unfortunately, I am not the only one who feels this way, for if I was I would never put this in Cobwebs Of The Mind. Certainly, not only do former members of the forum from time to time complain and leave in disgust, but it is also loosing its once "well respected" name among agents and editors as well. This is incredibly sad and should serve as a clarion call for Absolute Write. But only time will tell if it gains balance again or continues along a new path.

However, it does remain true, that there are many, many great people and writers that I have had the pleasure of meeting because of Absolute Write. Each and every one of the blogs in Cobwebs Of The Mind Blog Review Series, and those still to come, are worthy in their own right and certainly the people behind them are really incredible human beings. And there are some really great writers who are embarking upon successful careers in writing. I wish them all the best of luck.

I have also had the pleasure in Cobwebs Of The Mind Writing & Despair Series to try and combine a bit of humor and understanding of the writer's soul and fears. For me, this not only provides a somewhat creative project, but a way of trying to make us all not take ourselves too seriously. It also allows us to know that most important factor - we are not alone in our fears and angst.

Of course, the reviews of scams, literary agents, editors and publishing debates are a great source of education and amusement for me. The Cobwebs Of The Mind Super Teddy Award actually began because one day I got sick and tired of seeing the absolute junk and idiocy sometimes posted by agents and editors. The "God Complex" sometimes seems to itch at certain people and when it does simply put, someone has to say something.

The statistics for Cobwebs Of The Mind have constantly and consistently increased over the days and weeks and months. Though I do not watch the stats on a daily basis I do know that each month brings an ever more amount of people reading, commenting and sending in private emails. The community grows and as it does so does interest and the endless search for information.

I can only continue to attempt to bring information, good, bad or neutral to the readers of Cobwebs Of The Mind. Whereas I will miss a great deal, and I will certainly be wrong in my opinions from time to time, I do hope that most of the information, laughter and reviews at Cobwebs Of The Mind will continue to help, educate and inform the writers and would-be-writers out there.

I wish each and every one of you a year of great strides in writing and publishing.

Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers - "A Gent's Outlook"

Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers Awarded To The Entire Blog Called:
for Worthless Posts & being the Mother Of All Wannabes

Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers @ Cobwebs Of The MindOur very first "Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers" is awarded to an agent's blog known as "A Gent's Outlook". I first came across this "gem" in a link supplied on Absolute Write. If this blog were only useless I would ignore it. There are many blogs out there in blogosphere land that were started by agents, editors and publishers that were never updated after the first month. Either the agent just did not have time or they realized it is not so simple to get people to read what you write! (Must be a humbling experience for an agent to realize that the "plebeians" just don't want to read their musings.)

However, "A Gent's Outlook" takes the term "useless" and goes one step or many a great deal more. So first let us look at the nature of this blog. Here we have yet another, self-pronounced Literary agent, who divulges his real or fictitious name as SammyK. And just to make sure that you have no doubt he calls himself or considers himself an agent, the URL he chose for his blog, is: agentsoutlook.blogspot.com. To make that even clearer this blog runs with the subtitle, "A Literary Agent Divulges the TRUTH about Publishing".

Now though we now know we are looking at the blog of an "agent" or at least that is what Sammy calls himself, upon further investigation we also discover that we truly know nothing about this person. "Ahh," you say to yourself, "Another Miss Snark. Another Rejecter. Another Evil Editor."

Yes another anonymous voice in the Internet Blog deluge of information to entertain the hapless writers out there. But this anonymous voice is particularly inane, insulting and puerile. What makes the whole thing truly laughable is after plowing through a couple of Sammy's posts is that you discover this Blog is being used by someone to abstract revenge on people who are just leagues ahead of him in knowledge, humor and understanding of the publishing field. It is simply a vituperative effort in ill-concealed jealousy and ranting.

Sammy's favorite words seem to be "wannabe" and the ole' F*** word. Now having grown up in Manhattan, my ears are not virgin, and I guess given a good reason I could curse with the best of them. But when the word appears in what you write more times than a New York taxi cab driver stuck in the middle of midtown traffic on a Friday afternoon would utter it - something is a bit off. Sammy likes the "F" word. He thinks it is cute and funny. Two posts even have it in their heading. (The stars are mine, Sammy spells it out for you). "He Who Laughs Last, Laughs at the Rest of You F****** Morons", and "Why You Should Never F*** on a Computer Desk".

But let us put down the pet peeves and themes of this "professional agent" in his blog. They are fairly simple.
  1. Miss Snark is a hateful fool and a wannabe
  2. Writers are all whiners and clueless and all wannabes
  3. Anyone taken by a scam deserves it
  4. Why doesn't anyone pay attention to Sammy
Sammy has a real "thing" for Miss Snark. If I were to put it in his terms, he has a "hard on" for her. It is not that he does not like some posts of Miss Snark or does not agree with her. It is that he simply "hates" her. (Which I admit is kind of funny from one anonymous Blog owner to another). Post after post he comes back to the same thing - his enemy Miss Snark.

Make no mistake. Miss Snark also curses. Sometimes a bit too much. Sometimes she is over the top in her cynical attitude. And sometimes Miss Snark is just wrong. But I have yet to see a concentrated and continuous attack on anything in Miss Snark besides scammers (whom Sammy seems to think are the just curse for wannabe writers.)

In the end there is a whole world of difference between the two. All it takes is just a cursory reading of the posts made in November to see this incredible jealousy rear its truly ugly head.

Now, if it was just an attack on Miss Snark in every post, I would say, "You know what. The guy may have a point here and there." But it is not just an attack on what she says. It is a combination of "why do people listen to Miss Snark and they don't listen to me?" routine.

Here is one fine example from an agent who we are supposed to learn things from:
"As I see it, people across Cyberville are finally cluing in to the fact that Snark is mouthpiecing the core values propagated by the watchpuppies and their related industry outsiders. Other publishing people, LIKE ME, couldn’t give a shit less what anybody thinks except talented writers and the publishers who seek to exploit them. I have seen lots of comments, finally, from editors and other agents who are basically saying that Snark is on a very wrong tangent. She always has been, but nobody important said anything because SNARK JUST DOESN”T MATTER. Except to the minions she has created through her Dr. Phil Does Publishing persona. When she dipped into an area she really doesn't know anything about, she fell flat on her pretty little snout."
And here is another one from another post entitled "If You Knew Judy Like I Knew Judy (or The Greatest Wannabe of All)":
"I know Snark’s fans are too wannabe to understand the profundity of this little scandal in the ranks up here where the air is rarified, but us REAL agents are giddy. Kind of like watching someone get caught with her underwear stuck in her pretty little crack."
Oh dear reader, it goes on and on endlessly. It is tiring; it is imbecilic; it is foolish; and it is damn stupid and not even funny. Sammy too, is an anonymous agent. But Sammy does not even pretend to give us "wannabes" any information. His whole being is concentrated on one thing. Snark is an idiot, almost all authors are wannabes, and Sammy is King.

Let us read this little gem from a post entitled "Answer: You are a wannabe and know nothing about the industry and you shouldn’t be in it".
"I am a publishing industry professional who has put a lot of time and effort into doing my job well enough that I can take pride in my work. And yet, as I look around the internet, I can’t help but wonder if I am completely crazy or what. Other so-called industry professionals are blogging their little hearts out, providing information to wannabes as if it is going to get them somewhere besides Looneyville. I just sit here and wonder if I am delusional. I look around. There’s the contract on my desk from a major, so that’s real. Or did I print it out on my computer? What are those scribbles on it—signatures? Am I hallucinating? Maybe. But the call I got from the Oscar-winning director’s assistant yesterday--that seemed so real! The option offer seemed a little too high--could I have been drunk? Maybe I’m in a coma somewhere and don’t know it. The things I read on the internet just don’t add up, so it must be me. Have I finally lost what little mind I had left before the wannabes started sucking on my brain?"
The problem lies in that we are just subjected to these dumb rants from someone who claims to be an agent and want to give us the "TRUTH" about publishing. Try as hard as I could, I could not find one, not one, piece of advice to help me further my writing on a sane basis. I found out how great Sammy is (whoever he is, and to be perfectly frank - I don't give a damn), I found out how well Sammy is versed in normative street language, I found out how much Sammy thinks of himself, I found out how all writers are wannabes and stupid, I found out how much Sammy hates Miss Snark. All this I learned. Nothing else. Nada. Zilch.

Which of course leaves us with the overwhelming question as to what purpose this series of inane posts can possibly lead to besides self-gratification of an incredibly over-inflated ego.

Though Sammy only posts intermittently, I have no clue why anyone with even some self-respect left would frequent this blog. It is just full of hatred, idiotic statements, rants and certainly a somewhat deranged mind overcome by "Internet popularity jealousy". Waste your time doing something else, like playing Monopoly. You will learn a great deal more and not come away questioning the overall sanity of this child. In the end, Sammy simply needs a good spanking and some time-out time in his bedroom. Being stuck alone with his lovely personality is the ultimate revenge for Sammy.

Sammy's blog persona is just a bitter, mean person ravaged by jealousy and pettiness. It seems this "Gent" is suffering from a real acute case of "page-rank envy". Some people raise their page rank in normative ways. Others try to be funny by poking fun of people, hoping that this kind of humor will garner a following. One of the great lessons in life is when you poke fun at others in a mean and bitter way you just end up making a fool of yourself.

The only thing I could hope for is a swift death for the blog, and Sammy relegated into the realm of mediocrity and wannabe-ville he so richly deserves.

For as Sammy proves over and over again, the only Wannabe in his blog - is Sammy himself.

Introducing The "Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers"

Super Teddy! As writers we often scour the Net for any piece of information that can help in our quest to get our books published. We have out our disposal quite a few web sites and blogs that offer us information on what to do and how to do it. Some are good, some mediocre, some are really just plain stupid and bad.

I often scour these Blogs and Web Sites for information for Cobwebs Of The Mind as I am sure you know. And at times I get really fed up with some of those "professionals" who want to tell us they know it all and how to do it and what to do when they cannot even write a correct sentence. At other times you may find a gem here and there. I use all this information for Cobwebs Of The Mind and hopefully the many readers are learning day by day - with a bit of humor and intelligence.

And I know many writers scour these pages of wisdom and information as well. Over at Absolute Write some of the most popular threads are about Agent Blogs. There is even a thread called: List of Agent Blogs and another one called: A debate about agents.

Today, maybe because of my mood, maybe because I just had it up to the gills with some of the nastiness against writers I have read on a few Blogs or maybe just because..., I have come to the conclusion that it is time to take a bit of our "writers pride" back from the host of bashing blogs and editors.

Super Teddy! So I am introducing the "Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers" with it's very own mascot. What I will be doing is from time to time when I find a particularly good or smart or valuable piece of information; or a particularly stupid or loathsome or idiotic statement in an agent's or editor's blog or web site - I will post it here, in Cobwebs Of The Mind for the "Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers".

Oh yes, dear reader you read right. Don't gasp! Don't worry. Teddy is going to give back just what the writer's receive. If it is baseless idiotic comments on some Agent's or Editor's blog, then it is about time to return the favor is it not? Of course your comments will be welcome. And if you have any suggestions of specific Blogs, Web Sites or Posts that should be discussed, let me know in a comment or send me an email. You can stay anonymous if you like. But Teddy is not ashamed nor will I hide.

It is time for the writers to fight back!!!

P.S. Stay tuned and tell all your friends. Because I already have the First Award in the
"Super Teddy Award Series For Agents, Editors & Publishers" all lined up!
